Mount Baker Summer Day Camp 2013

2013 SUMMER DAY CAMP WEEKLY THEMES:

Week 1: GEARS GO ROUND (JUNE 17-21)

Let’s set the fun in motion with a week filled with wheels! Your child is invited to bring in their bicycles, roller blades, or scooters so we can trek our way to Seward Park and continue our annual tradition. Field trips this week include trips to Seward and Jefferson Park for riding adventures.

Week 2: GREEN THUMB (JUNE 24-28)

This week will be focused on Healthy foods and Gardening! Plan on working in our raised bed gardens, learn about local farms and eat yummy, nutritious foods. Field trips will include a Pike Place Market visit and a walking tour of local P-Patches for unique planting ideas.

Week 3: ANIMALS IN ACTION (JULY 1-3 & 5; CLOSED JULY 4)

A visit to the zoo and the aquarium in the same week, WOW! In between will be our popular Stuffed Animal Veterinary Day where the kiddos bring in their favorite stuffed animal and fix all their problems with bandages, band aids and TLC.

Week 4: THIRST FOR KNOWLEDGE (JULY 8-12)

Summer in Seattle must include as much water as possible! This week we will ride the Bainbridge Island Ferry in search of the perfect ice cream cone, go swimming at Mt. Baker Beach, and compete in the Kids Co Sand Castle Competition.

Week 5: URBAN EXPLORERS (JULY 15-19)

Bring your walking shoes and adventure packs this week! We’ll go on a hike through the woods in Seward Park to collect artifacts for our hand-made dream catchers, embark upon scavenger hunts in Mt. Baker Park, and tromp through the University of Washington in search of the perfect viewpoint of Mt. Rainier.

Week 6: CULTURE QUEST (JULY 22-26)

Let’s take a trip to the International District to experience different cultures through food and crafts, and travel the world through food from Asia, Latin America, and Africa.

Week 7: BODIES IN MOTION (JULY 29-AUGUST 1; CLOSED AUGUST 2)

Olympic-like events this week include paper airplane accuracy and distance competition, touch rugby games at Mt. Baker Park, running sprints, and hula hoop contests. Students will design and create their own gold, silver, and bronze medals to celebrate their accomplishments.

Week 8: TRANSPORTATION NATION (AUGUST 5-9)

Moving bodies and moving machines is the focus this week with a visit to the Museum of Flight and a trip to Seattle Center, trips that will include rides on both the Light Rail and the Monorail! To top it off, students will trick out their own race car using simple wooden blocks and cool, shiny crafts.

Week 9: LITTLE EINSTEINS (AUGUST 12-16)

Put on your thinking cap and white robe. This week will include a trip to the Pacific Science Center, fun experiments using electricity and potatoes. We’ll also test and perfect exploding volcanoes and lava lamps.

Week 10: ARTFUL ANTICS (AUGUST 19-23)

Plan on exploring art in many forms this week. We’ll take a walking tour of local art and architecture, explore the use of recycled materials while creating art and learn about the beauty of art through nature.

Week 11: KIDS CO. GIVES BACK (AUGUST 26-29)

We live in a very unique and rich community, so let’s get out there and help our neighbors! Community service is the theme this week with a visit to a local food bank, helping out at the local P-Patch and learning about other ways to support our friends and make our neighborhood vibrant and beautiful!
