In the Kids Co. Early Learning Program at John Hay Elementary the environment and schedule is arranged to optimize learning and community with a balanced program of group and free choice time, quiet time and active time. We provide a diverse range of learning centers and activities in a self directed environment. There are opportunities for the children to share their knowledge, raise questions, reflect upon each other's work and make decisions in governing the classroom community. We provide a space for young children that is healthy, respectful, supportive and challenging. Our aim is to help build a foundation for each child's path to school readiness and life-skills development.
John Hay has been an excellent partner in our Early Learning Program. There will be many opportunities for your child to be a part of the school. In October we begin eating lunch in the cafeteria once a week. We also have a library day where your child will be able to check out books from the John Hay library. We have a buddy program that gives our preschool students the opportunity to do activities with the second graders on a weekly basis. In the spring we begin our classroom visits where we join circle time in various kindergarten classes to give your child a chance to experience kindergarten first hand.
We believe that children learn through play. We use the Creative Curriculum which focuses on the developmental and learning needs of each child. We present everyday activities that incorporate patterns, graphs, numbers, print, poetry and literacy. We offer opportunities for the children to experiment with different mediums like paint and clay, as well as express themselves through drama, story and dance. We also use the Kindergarten readiness checklist that John Hay uses and the developmental benchmarks created by Washington State Department of Education to assess your child's school readiness. Our goal is to help prepare each child for success in Kindergarten.
