Kids Co. at John Hay is a unique child care enrichment program for children before- and after-school. We have a variety of activities for your child including arts and crafts, sports and outdoor games, cooking and life-skills, drama and music, homework and reading help, as well as fun group activities in a safe and nurturing environment.
Our daily schedule gives children the opportunity to choose an activity that best suits their individual interests. We also offer quiet activities to help children unwind after their day at school.
Here at Kids Co. we use an anti-bias approach so that every child can feel comfortable and welcome. The children are encouraged to develop their own ideas and express their views. As a team, our staff works to make sure that each child feels both a respected part of the group and a unique individual.
We attempt to provide a balance of activities that foster both teamwork and inclusion as well as celebrate the diversity of our kids. We use the activity guide, Adventures In Peacemaking that has non-competitive games and activities which focus on conflict resolution, appreciating diversity and cooperation.
We like to get to know each family, and hope to make Kids Co. your child's home away from home.
BEFORE-SCHOOL PROGRAM (7:00 - 9:00 AM)
Our morning program offers a pleasant and welcoming environment to help your child start the day. We play games, draw and read, and weather permitting, play outside. Each day we serve a delicious and nutritious breakfast from 8:00-8:30. The children eat at tables and serve themselves family-style. A menu is posted on the Parent Board. After breakfast, we spend some time as a group, sharing, telling jokes, listening to a story, or playing a group game. The children are allowed (except Kindergartners) to leave for supervised outdoor play at 8:45.
AFTER-SCHOOL PROGRAM (K-3) (3:00 - 6:00 PM)
After school, the children in K-3 arrive at our main space and have the opportunity to choose from several activities including eating a snack, reading, the art table or unwinding outside in our backyard.
During this time, a staff member will take a minute to check-in with your child and help them make an activity choice. We also take this time to be sure that each child has arrived as scheduled. We then have a short group meeting to make announcements, introduce new staff or children, and describe the day's project.
We'll then move to Free Choice Time where the children can choose to participate in the day's project, or play in one of the many areas such as outside or in the gym, the Lego's and Block Area, the House Area, the Exploration Table, or the Book Nook, to name a few. We have a Peace Place where the children can go to solve conflicts or to have some alone time in our designated Alone Zones. We also have a couch available by the Parent Table where your child can go when feeling sick.
We use a name tag system and walkie-talkies to keep track of where the kids are at all times.
Homework Club is from 4:30 until 5:00 Monday-Thursday. Homework Club is voluntary. Our staff works with a small group to help them start their homework and provide support when needed. This time is generally not sufficient to actually finish homework, so please remember to check with your child at the end of the day. At 5:00, we wind down with clean-up and quiet time. We take this time to read with your child, draw or play a quiet game.
OLDER KIDS AFTER-SCHOOL PROGRAM (4-5) (3:00 - 6:00 PM)
Our 4th and 5th grade program, named FLIERS, is housed in the school cafeteria, across the hall from the main program space. FLIERS stands for Fun, Leadership, Independence, Enrichment, Responsibility and Success.
Through FLIERS, we provide similar activities to that in the main space but with more developmentally-appropriate projects and supplies. Children enrolled in FLIERS are allowed more opportunities to practice independence and responsibility. Staff plans activities based on the ideas of the children while focusing on teamwork and group games. We emphasize our trust in them by allowing them to use the school bathroom, go outside (to join their group) or across the hall to the main program as long as they inform their teachers.
FLIERS offers a more focused homework time that runs from 4:00-4:30 Monday-Thursday. We expect all of the FLIERS kids to participate in the homework time, but we do not expect them to complete their homework. Clean-up begins at 5:30, after which the kids join the other Kids Co. children back across the hall in the main room for quiet activities such as board games, reading and art.
