Kids Co. at The New School is a unique child care program serving the New School community. As the grades are added each year at the school, we'll ultimately be offering programs for children ages 4 to 12-years-old.
Working in tandem with the New School teachers is one of the many keys to our success in delivering a high-quality program to your children. Our staff is trained side-by-side with school teachers in the High/Scope curriculum. During the school year, children participate in our out-of-school time program using the High/Scope philosophy.
At Kids Co., we get to know each child and learn about her individual needs and unique strengths in order to provide a program that challenges the individual while keeping the group motivated to learn. Our day includes a variety of individual activities, small group explorations, and large group gatherings. Social, life-readiness, and pre-academic skill-building opportunities are provided throughout the day through direct hands-on experiences.
As children learn through play, they develop skills that will help them succeed academically and socially in school.
It is important for the children to participate in outings and projects that expand their world. On a regular basis, we will take advantage of our school's library, computer lab and even trips to the local community center, parks and the Public Library.
BEFORE-SCHOOL PROGRAM (7:00 - 9:00 AM)
The program provides an opportunity for children to socialize before school and gear-up for the day ahead. Children can have breakfast with their friends (breakfast is a program of the Seattle Public Schools), play, relax, participate in an art or craft activity, read stories, or just be with their buddies.
AFTER-SCHOOL PROGRAM (3:00 - 6:00 PM)
After school, the children arrive at our main space and have the opportunity to choose from several activities include, reading, board games, the art table or just relaxing with a friend. During this time, a staff member will take a minute to check-in with your child and help them make a choice regarding activities. We also take this time to be sure that each child has arrived as scheduled. We then have a short group meeting to make announcements, introduce new staff or children, describe the day's activities and play a group game.
The students are then separated into in two activity groups: the Pre-Kindergarten and Kindergarten group and the 1st through 3rd grade group. Each group has their own assigned School-Age Counselor, developmentally appropriate group time and planned activities.
We'll then dismiss to snack time where a healthy and nutritious snack is offered as well as time for socializing and practicing table etiquette. Students can them choose among activities such as outside play, Lego's, blocks, the home center, the listening center and board games.
After the free - play period, students in each group may participate in a planned activity facilitated by staff. These activities may include story time, cooking, art, crafts, science, gym and/or outdoor time. We believe that the children should participate in a way that fits for them. Our staff works hard to create fun activities that engage busy minds, yet allows for the individual needs of the children.
Homework Club is Tuesday and Thursday, 3:30 until 4:00. Homework Club is voluntary. Our staff works with a smaller group to help them start their homework and provide support when needed. Homework Club is offered as a choice, as are our other activities in our afternoon program. Students need time to relax and enjoy!
At 5:15, we wind down with clean-up and quiet time. We take this time to read with your child, draw or write in a journal, or play a quiet game.
Together, Kids Co. and your family can make this experience one of the many fond memories and exciting adventures for your child's young life.
