Sharing

Personal, Everyday, Profound: Sharing.

We thought long and hard about what name to give our donations pages. Many nonprofits use “give” or “donate,” but we felt they did not adequately reflect our experience of the people, businesses, and foundations that choose to support our work. Yes, donors give to Kids Co. However, within their acts of giving we believe something more occurs, a something that feels personal and profound.

To us, sharing more accurately describes this experience. It is a word that suggests relational connection, one that conveys the truth that Kids Co. donors share in this work of providing quality childcare. It is what our teachers model for children everyday and it is the compassionate action of people whose resource sharing make their work possible.

Sharing is a word that affirms that we are in this together.

Every contribution and grant Kids Co. receives is viewed through this lens.

A Common Kids Co. Story

She arrived in a desperate panic, carrying every one of her bills in her purse. Recently, she had received a $100 raise. For most people, this would be cause for celebration, but for this single mom it meant that DSHS would significantly decrease her childcare subsidy. In fact, her $100 raise was winding up costing her $200 because it bumped her into a DSHS income category that increased her childcare co-pay by $300! She knew she would not be able to make ends meet. She needed childcare for her son, but she simply did not have the money to pay for the substantial increase in cost.

“Unfortunately, this scenario is all too common,” shared Kids Co. founder and CEO, Susan Brown. “Hard-working, low-income parents trying to provide for their families routinely find themselves penalized by increased DSHS childcare co-pays when they receive even a modest increase in pay.”

When this happens, Kids Co. is able to make up the difference thanks to the contributions it receives from donors. Parents, like the single mom above, who otherwise would need to pull their children from childcare—an act that is devastating to children, as well as parents—are assured continued quality childcare,
