Is a Career in Child Care Right for Me?

Have you ever thought about working in the child care field but are not sure if the job is the right fit for you, your skills and experience, or your career goals?  Not everyone is equipped to work in a daycare, preschool, or child care center. Here are some things to consider before your job search or interview for early childhood education or after school programming jobs.

Do you love kids?

Of course you do! That’s what brought you here in the first place.

Do you love INTERACTING WITH kids A LOT?

This may sound redundant, but there is a difference between playing with kids ever once in a while and spending your whole week actively engaging with children.  If you want to work with kids, it takes energy, patience, and a good sense of humor to keep up with the excitement of youngsters.

Do you believe in the power of play?

High-quality child care is an extension of the classroom, providing kids with new ways to learn and explore. Every project, experiment, activity, and game is an opportunity for kids (and teachers) to learn, grow, and develop. The best child care workers will, not only provide fun and engaging activities for the littles in their care, but also play and learn right along with them. After all, the world’s most renowned theoretical physicist, Albert Einstein, famously said “play is the highest form of research.”

Do you want to make a real difference?

Child care providers serve as role models to the kiddos in their care. Whether you work in an early learning center, preschool, or after-school enrichment program for school-age kids, you will influence how kids interact with the world around them. It’s an opportunity to shape the future and really make an impact.

Do you want to have fun at work?

Most people find some element of fun in their everyday work, but how many can say that they get to play all day? A career in child care is hard work, but it is also a lot of fun! Each day is an opportunity to see things through a child’s eyes. While you need be responsible and alert, you get to play, laugh, get messy and have fun!

So is a career in child care right for you?

If you answered YES! to the above questions, then you should definitely consider a career in child care. It is one of the most rewarding careers there is. You will get to play with kids, while helping them grow and develop into caring and confident young citizens. AND, child care is the work that enables ALL other work so you are not just shaping the future for kids, you’re shaping it for all of us.
